DR ASHOK KUMAR WALIA
(08 December 1948 - 22 April 2021)
A legendary leader, a statesman par excellence and the founder of Mother Mary’s School, Dr. Ashok Kumar Walia was born on 08 December, 1948. He completed his Higher Secondary Education and pursued MBBS to serve as a doctor in several renowned hospitals. During his tenure as a doctor, he dedicated his services to the betterment of the poor, needy and the downtrodden. Furthering his services, he established the Walia Nursing Home in Laxmi Nagar in 1983 providing State- of- the- Art facilities. Upon joining active politics, the Nursing Home was entrusted to a Charitable trust.
He devoted his entire life serving the citizens of Delhi. His pleasant personality, versatility and selfless service made him respected and popular among the masses. He joined the field of active politics in the year 1993 where he achieved the distinction of winning four consecutive terms as a Member of Legislative Assembly of Delhi. He shot into prominence of his political career when he represented the Delhi State Government as a Cabinet Minister. Here, he held the key portfolios of Minister of Finance, Health and Family Welfare, Power Planning, Urban Development and Land and Building.
As the Finance and Planning Minister, he introduced Value Added Tax (VAT) which enhanced the revenue of the Delhi state substantially. During his tenure as the Health Minister, he altered the face of Delhi by undertaking various projects that included opening of 39 new hospitals and 61 dispensaries between 1998 to 2013. His unwavering commitment to public service and contribution towards transforming Delhi will always be remembered.
His contribution towards Higher Education is also unforgettable. He opened 5 Universities, 6 Deemed Universities, 22 Colleges for general education and 23 colleges for Professional Education. As a PWD Minster, he focused on strengthening Delhi's infrastructure with 65 flyovers, 60 foot-over bridges, roads and subways.
Education was always his priority with his primary focus on empowering the girl child. Mother Mary's School was his dream project by means of which he wanted to give wings to the budding youth, a platform to prepare them to accept challenges and scale greater heights as globally sensitive citizens. With this vision, the school was started in the year 2006 and ever since, it has been making progress leaps and bounds. Under his able guidance, the school has set new milestones in the Pursuit of Excellence.
He believed that "Service towards Humanity is Service towards God" and devoted his entire life to serve the people of his State in every manner possible. Dr. Walia left for his heavenly abode on 22 April 2021.
An ever-smiling face, a generous heart, a selfless soul-ever so willing to work for the good of others, Dr. Walia was an Elixir to many. He was indeed a true Samaritan. His willingness to go over and beyond his call of duty to help people will keep him alive in our hearts forever.
